Coach Alan Helquist grew up playing basketball, suiting up for San Jose Catholic in the Catholic grade school league in the late 80s, and then playing point guard for legendary Coach Joe Pichardo at Bishop Kenny High School. After graduation from Bishop Kenny, Coach Helquist took his talents to the hardwood at Florida State University, walking on the team to make the roster in 1993. It was a brief stint on the roster, but it was at this point that he realized basketball would always be a part of his life.
In 1997, after graduating from Florida State, Coach H started his coaching career at Fernandina Beach High School, where he was the head JV coach and assistant varsity coach, compiling a 39-13 record. After 2 years, his hometown of Jacksonville beckoned, and Coach Helquist started coaching at his alma matter, San Jose Catholic. Alongside Coach Patrick Thornton, the two combined for 63 wins and 2 grade school championships in a 5-year period, including an undefeated 18-0 record in their second season together.
After coaching his young son and daughter for 5 years, another coaching opportunity came calling. Coach Helquist coached for 3 years as the head boys’ varsity coach at Bishop Snyder High School from 2010-2013. His teams were fierce and competitive, playing tough fought games against Bishop Kenny, Providence, Bolles, and many other Jacksonville powerhouse basketball programs.
Coach Helquist finished his 4th season at Holy Family Catholic School in October of 2018. With a fantastic group of young men, Coach H led his team to the pre-season tournament championship, the division championship with a 9-0 record (only undefeated boys basketball team in Holy Family history), and an overall 14-1 record on the season. The team finished runner up in the final tournament and outscored opponents by a margin of over 200 points during the season.
Coach Helquist believes in fundamental basketball, hard work, dedication, discipline, faith, and pride. But, as all his players have learned, Coach H does it with a positive attitude and a magnificent spirit. Basketball has always been Coach Helquist’s passion, and this passion is evidenced when he is coaching on the floor. There are many lessons to learn from everything Coach H teaches, including valuable life skills that young men and women can take with them.
